Final letter to pupils

On my last day as a headteacher, I wrote a letter to my pupils thanking them for everything they had taught me. I hope it resonates with other school leaders.

Dear children,

Today is my last day as your headteacher. I have decided that the time is right for me to retire, so I can spend more time doing the things I enjoy and with the people I love. I know I don’t look old enough, but I’ve been a headteacher for 20 years and a teacher for almost 35. I’ve taught some of your parents, which is scary enough and I’d quite like to go before any grandparents turn up.

I became a teacher all those years ago because I believed that children had the power to change the world and that I could help them to achieve it. Even when my job was difficult or I had trouble in my personal life, I never lost sight of this, which has made every single day a joy. You can change the world and, now more than ever, children are speaking up on issues they care about and fighting for causes close to their heart, such as climate change, gender equality and racial justice. You inspire me every day, and I am thankful that you’ve helped to keep me young!

When you believe in something and want to make a difference, nothing else matters. This is what I want for all of you; I want you to find something you believe in and something that you’re good at, and when you do, give it your all. We all have different skills and talents so it’s important not to be afraid or ashamed of who you are and what you love doing. Even if that means you don’t always fit in, keep being you.

Teaching is a wonderful job. Lots of things have changed since I started all those years ago; we didn’t have laptops of iPads then, whiteboards were blackboards, and the standard of teaching has increased. But some things haven’t changed at all; children have always been curious, loving and fun, schools have always been essential to the local community, and staff have always been willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the boys and girls in their care get the best possible education. The last 18 months have proven this beyond all doubt.

You are incredibly lucky to have teachers who care for you as much as those at Whitegate End. They do an outstanding job, and I am incredibly grateful for everything they do and the sacrifices they make. You might be surprised if I tell you that teachers learn just as much from you, but it’s true. Your energy, optimism and kindness are inspiring, and I will miss you all very much.

I hope you all go on to live incredibly successful lives, but most of all I hope you are happy. I have loved being a headteacher and I will always be proud to have known all of you.

With love and best wishes,

Mrs Joanna Conway
